Setting the bar for book clubs.
Drinking beer on Tuesday nights with people you don’t know—this ain’t your mama’s book club. For nine years, Books and Bars has brought Twin Cities lit lovers together for a monthly schmooze of cheap beer and book talk. Jeff Kamen moderates a spirited discussion on three consecutive Tuesdays each month at local venues in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Chanhassen. Everyone’s welcome to take part in the dialogue. In a recent discussion of Louise Erdrich’s novel Round House, phrases like “commodity cheese,” and “what about the money?” juiced up a serious discourse on European guilt and Native American culture. “I did something really stupid. I gave up drinking for Lent and I’m not even Catholic. I never given something up and wanted to try it. But a priest said Sundays don’t count. Well, he didn’t say it to me, but good Catholics verified it. Have you ever heard about this Sunday off Lent thing? Good thing St. Pat’s is on a Sunday this year. Anyway, I had 1 Sunday break at, of all places, The Children’s Museum.”

Wrote this post about career choices 3 years ago and am in a much different place today. Some of the same wants and desires still apply and some are being met in a new way.

2013 notes to 2010 list.

2010
FILM – still want more
WRITING – might be at right amount of this
COMEDY – getting some of this with jobs
MUSIC/DJ – getting some
PLACE/VENUE – own bar/restaurant/theater for movies/host B&B, trivia, bands, games, art, sports, wine —-> still a MAYBE
B&B – get paid, franchise, web videos —> YES, starting to work
TV SHOW – cable, local - ooh, yeah, more of this, please
EVENT PLANNER - wow, a lot of my current job, now
RADIO – host, podcasts - see above, sort of, could be more.
BIZ w/ MU friends (names held here for privacy)
TRAVEL – always want more of this…

The Great Pumpkin Seeds

I made these today and they’re the best pumpkin seeds you never tasted:
Rinse seeds with water.
Strain most of the water out, but let them sit in some water and sea salt in a bowl overnight.
Pre-heat 350 degrees.
Spray cooking sheet. Spread seeds evenly. Melt a little butter and pour over them. Sea salt’em liberally.
Bake for 15 min. Take out and flip, respread. (dash of pepper if desired)
Bake another 5-7 min. Lightly browned.
Bring enough to work to get in trouble, but not make more friends yet.
