I volunteered in Doodles’ Kindergarten classroom today. It’s always a fountain of writing material. Apropos of nothing, a friendly girl walked up to the table I was working at with Doodles. This is a transcript of our conversation.

Kindergarten Girl:  I’m allergic to orange juice…and eggs.

Volunteer Jefe:  Oh, I’m sorry, but I’ll be sure to never bring those to your classroom.

Girl:  I’m also allergic to sandwiches.

Jefe: Whoa, that’s too bad.

Girl: Well, I’m not allergic to them. I just don’t like the way they smell.

Jefe: Have you tried eating one?

Girl: If I did I would have to go into the bathroom and spit it out like this…(mimics vomiting)

You should volunteer in classrooms for the material.

“Mr. Sun” by Pablo is probably the most appropriate clip for MSP today. Enjoy the tune sung by Burroughs’ Kindergarten class.

Last Day of Kindergarten

It’s Pablo’s last day of Kindergarten and it did go as fast as everyone tells you. At least we have another son to go through it, because I don’t want it to end so soon. Kindergarten done already? Now it’s real school grades next year. You really do wish you had a gold watch which could freeze time for a while so you could step back and appreciate it more. Mama, Doodles and I will be attending the end of year concert program in a couple hours. Hopefully we’ll have some blog-worthy footage to post. Stay tuned.

For some reason, the song stuck in my head as we stood in the pouring rain at the bus stop was ”That’s What Friends Are For” which was originally from Night Shift, Ron Howard’s first film.

The closing theme song, “That’s What Friends Are For,” was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. The song is performed by Rod Stewart in the film. It was later covered byDionne Warwick & Friends (Stevie WonderGladys Knight, and Elton John); John’s version became a Billboard Grammy Award-winning #1 hit and raised millions for AIDS causes.

Not a lot of people remember that the song was actually first from a movie about a couple guys running a prostitution ring in a morgue.

Plot:

Chuck (Winkler), formerly a successful stockbroker, has found a refuge from the ulcer-inducing Wall Street rat race in his job as an attendant at the New York City morgue. His displeasure at being “promoted” to night shift supervisor to make room for his boss’s nephew is exacerbated by the irrational exuberance of Bill “Blaze” Blazejowski (Keaton), his new coworker. However, both men are inspired by the plight of Chuck’s prostitute neighbor, Belinda (Long), to apply Chuck’s M.B.A. education and Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit to open a prostitution service with headquarters at the morgue.

I remember liking the movie a lot at the time. Keaton was really on fire. According to Netflix, this 1982 flick is

Genre:
Late Night Comedies
This movie is:
Feel-goodSteamyGoofy

And isn’t that just like Kindergarten? Feel-good, goofy…okay, hopefully not steamy.

Am I a bad dad that pose A made me laugh aloud upon pulling it from Pablo’s school folder? He’s still adorable even when trying to look somewhat menacingly tough. Mama says pose A is too cheesy. (She laughed, too.) We may order pose B. The photographer encouraged this pose as evidenced from the other samples of students pictured in the folder, but it’s funny for a 5-year-old, right?
