Name That Tune is a new bar trivia game sponsored by Trivia Mafia. I’m hosting at the Aster Cafe every 4th Tuesday of the month. For $5 you get your first Fulton beer and a chance to win gift cards, beer, wine and food. Each additional beer is only $3. Read to the end for hints and clues to this week’s game. Every 4th Tuesday, 7:30-10pm.

Name That Tune - RULES

·     Rounds 1-5: From 8 seconds down to 4 second samples of popular songs.  Work as a team to complete your scorecard.

·     Rounds 6 & beyond: each team chooses a representative to Name That Tune from the stage.  Samples are decreasing in time every round from 4 seconds down to 1 second samples.

·     Throughout each round, Fulton Drafts are only $3, so drink up.  (Really, it’s kind of a rule.)

·     Only the top 3 teams will move onto round 6, so fill out as many answers as you can.  There is no penalty for guessing. We award Prizes for the top 5 teams!

·     Wild cards: in rounds 1 through 5: use your Wild Card to ask your server for their opinion on one sample (and one sample only, got it?)

·     Wild Cards: in round 6 & beyond, bring your Wild Card to the stage and play it for a hint.

·     This is all about fun, so let’s have some.  No cheating with phones, whatever.  Rules may be amended by your host/dj/judge to keep the party hearty and make things interesting!

Follow your host, Jeff Kamin, @Jefe23 on Twitter for hints and clues. And become a fan of our Facebook page!

Thanks for coming to Name That Tune. Every 4th Tuesday at Aster Café

May 24th:5 category clues

Because it’s May and it snowed/sleeted a little today. And I died a little inside wondering why we live here. Will it ever be kickball season again? How many layers will I need at Target Field for next week’s night game? How much is the next paycheck going to be? Will our house be as good as new when repaired from ice dam damage? There have been so many instances in the last year where I wanted to complain or feel sorry for myself and then I took a wider look around me and realized it’s going to be okay. It’s not so bad here. It could be a lot worse. My thoughts go out to those who do actually have it worse. It’s been pretty bad out there for so many in the world lately. It’s all about perpective and point of view. And you just don’t know how lucky you probably are. So, look at my adorable boys enjoying Winter. Hope they like it in May, too. These guys make me happy and as long as they’re okay, I’ll be ok. We’ll be ok. You will too. Hang in there. I’m probably thinking about you when I get a chance.

I’d use public transit more if it always looked like the Holidazzle Parade bus. We were lucky to catch the Holidazzle before it ended and also see Santa at Macy’s. The Santa visit was not so good, though. Pablo said he wasn’t the real Santa because he didn’t say, “Ho ho ho.” We countered with, well, maybe there wasn’t anything funny to laugh about yet. Pablo put a nail in it with: “And I saw a strap on his fake beard.” DOH! Should have gone back to the same old, real bearded Santa at Southdale, I guess. Macy’s has at least three different rooms with very different looking Santas to visit. The problem comes when you view your kid’s photo on the screen right next to two other screens showing the different versions. So then Pablo says he wants to see the real Santa because he knows he is in there. Well, at least he still believes. But I said if you get what you asked for from the Santa you saw then you at least know he’s one of his helpers. You have to call mall Santas the helpers sometimes. Anyway, I had to go out and buy another toy to keep the myth alive. Hopefully when Pablo opens the Super Hero Squad guys on Christmas morning he’ll feel better about Old Strap-on Beard Claus.

Wheeler EP review and free download! #Minneapolis

Wheeler – Wheeler EP review

Like a warm blanket you pull out for winter, Wheeler recalls a simpler time of  the 1990s alternative-country hayday. The efficient self-titled EP evokes Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, the spirit of wanderlust and the open road with touches of longing and loss. But there’s something high flying here, too. Recorded live over two days, the production strives for a spontaneous feel with rough edges left intact. Vocalist/guitarist Josh Dibley employs a laid back confident style in his tenor complimented nicely by Guitarist/vocalist Eric Goplin’s harmonies. Geoff Grcevich (drums) and Jason Branton (bass) pave a rollicking backbeat for infectious rockers like “Flight Risk” and “Union”. The most emotionally atmospheric highlight is the darkly moody centerpiece, “Weather”. It all rolls along cohesively with a Sunday afternoon vibe culminating nicely in the closer “Ghost” in which our protagonists juxtapose a lost life with lost love. You’ll wrap yourselves around these friendly and familiar songs.

http://wheelerband.com/ has a free download of the EP.

You can catch Wheeler live Fri, Dec 17th at Memory Lanes with We Became Actors and Thurs, Dec 30th headlining at Bryant Lake Bowl.

Stars - “Dead Hearts” live in Minneapolis at First Avenue

I love that Stars wears their heart on their sleeve. They are dramatic pop music because being in love and passionate is dramatic. Share your passion. What’s more important than to love and be loved?

Stars backstage First Avenue - 10/27/10. Torq Campbell of Stars dedicated “The Comeback” to The Replacements. On a music fandom geek level, backstage with Stars was up there with meeting Paul Westerberg for me, too. Although we had a much more in depth and personal experience talking with Torq, Amy and Stars. Torq talked about how much Minneapolis means to him because his parents met working at the Guthrie Theater. We talked about how when you invest in art in a community, the payback is much greater than most people realize. I can’t site the specific studies but it wasn’t just the Jameson talking.

Stars played many of our favorite songs including “Reunion”, which Campbell talked about how personal it was to him. Stars have been changing their set list up quite a bit to keep it interesting. The set we heard was pretty spot on to my wish list. I’ve seen the band live three times and this was my favorite, the best concert of the year.

Evan Cranley: “Your (business) card has an owl with a beer, wait, and a robot with a mustache…You guys have cool jobs.”

Stars live video of “Set Yourself on Fire” at First Avenue, Minneapolis, on Wed, Oct. 27th, 2010. I shot it with a Flip Mino HD which did a pretty decent job for being so close to the amps and the size of a phone. It was an amazing show and night as we got to hang out backstage with the band. They were incredibly nice and down-to-earth. Torq Campbell has an 18 mo. old daughter and Amy Millan is pregnant (with Evan Cranley, bassist and more) due in mid-March. Mama and I were the only two people backstage for the first half hour and then three more people joined the party. But we were treated to a very intimate evening with the band. They were totally interested and complimentary about Books & Bars and Mama being a yoga instructor, too.  It was funny to hear them say we had cool jobs. I mean, they’re rock stars! Even actors wish they were rock stars. It was an unforgettable experience. More to come in the next posts including video and photos.
