Here’s my 2012 faves mixtape with some tracks missing because they’re not on Spotify. Most notably “Always Alright” by Alabama Shakes from Silver Linings Playbook. But this is a good representation of what I liked this year. We used to make tapes, then CD-Rs, now we have this. So, listen for free and enjoy! Merry Holidays! El Jefe.

OH MY GOD. Cults. I haven’t heard a ton this year I have totally loved. But I love Cults, also Mates of State, Little Dragon, Memphis, Dom, new Dessa, We Became Actors, Halloween, Alaska, and Haley Bonar. What am I forgetting? Come play Name That Tune (tonight) every 3rd Monday of the month at Republic and 4th Tuesday at Aster Cafe. I promise nothing as obscure as this track. http://triviamafia.com

“Harry’s Wondrous World” by John Williams. I like the titular playfulness with Louis Armstrong. This is my favorite of all the wonderful melodies and music scores heard in the Harry Potter films. Oddly it first really grabbed me when I heard it as the theme to the Lego Harry Potter videogame Pablo y Doodles were playing. John Williams has helped put the themes in the heads of another generation.

Hear this and others including Harry and the Potters tomorrow as you take your OWLs quiz for Hogwarts at Books & Bars. @booksandbars on twitter - discuss all the books with us from 6-9pm CST or anytime with hashtag #booksandbars

Name That Tune is a new bar trivia game sponsored by Trivia Mafia. I’m hosting at the Aster Cafe every 4th Tuesday of the month. For $5 you get your first Fulton beer and a chance to win gift cards, beer, wine and food. Each additional beer is only $3. Read to the end for hints and clues to this week’s game. Every 4th Tuesday, 7:30-10pm.

Name That Tune - RULES

·     Rounds 1-5: From 8 seconds down to 4 second samples of popular songs.  Work as a team to complete your scorecard.

·     Rounds 6 & beyond: each team chooses a representative to Name That Tune from the stage.  Samples are decreasing in time every round from 4 seconds down to 1 second samples.

·     Throughout each round, Fulton Drafts are only $3, so drink up.  (Really, it’s kind of a rule.)

·     Only the top 3 teams will move onto round 6, so fill out as many answers as you can.  There is no penalty for guessing. We award Prizes for the top 5 teams!

·     Wild cards: in rounds 1 through 5: use your Wild Card to ask your server for their opinion on one sample (and one sample only, got it?)

·     Wild Cards: in round 6 & beyond, bring your Wild Card to the stage and play it for a hint.

·     This is all about fun, so let’s have some.  No cheating with phones, whatever.  Rules may be amended by your host/dj/judge to keep the party hearty and make things interesting!

Follow your host, Jeff Kamin, @Jefe23 on Twitter for hints and clues. And become a fan of our Facebook page!

Thanks for coming to Name That Tune. Every 4th Tuesday at Aster Café

May 24th:5 category clues

Pause for a little bit country, a lot of rock and roll, purple royalty, and symbolic numbers.

It can’t hurt to follow @BooksandBars www.booksandbars.com and #albumclub @album_club to see some of my other inspirations for Name That Tune. Hope to see you Tuesday.

Thanks!

“Tatooine” by Jeremy Messersmith with paper cut-out video by Eric Power. All apologies if you’ve seen it already, but for those who haven’t it’s worth experiencing. Love the focus on father & sons in a brief retelling of the original trilogy. Surprisingly (or not, knowing me) touching and beautiful. Was inspired to post after seeing Messersmith’s wonderful Works for Words show at the Fitzgerald Theater this week.

Q: Last but not least, any musical guilty pleasures?

A: There is no such thing. Guilt and music don’t go together. Feel guilty about treating the ones you love like shit. Feel guilty about driving your car to the corner store. Feel guilty about living in the west. But music never hurt anyone, never lied to anyone, never did anything except make people feel something, good or bad. So why would I be guilty about what I listen to? Better vulgar art than no art at all. And for real, if a Celine Dion record was the last album on earth, I’d fight to save it. If on the other hand it was a Black Eyed Peas album…

Knights of the Bright Side.” It’s finally available. You can hear (and buy) the song Sammy Doodles and Pablo inspired: “Knights of the Bright Side” by We Became Actors.

Get it and come to the record release party on Apr 16th at Kitty Cat Club. I’m so proud of these guys and honored to be in the Kickball Choir heard in the background on tracks, “Visit Pt. 2” and “I Feel Like This Summer is Gonna Be One Long Hold Steady Song”.

I love this record. If there’s any justice you’ll hear these tunes blasting from open car windows this Summer. Let’s start with yours. Support our local talent. Click on the title above to hear samples and order.

I made one (go get mine!) and got the “Pearl Trip” mix. The owner said people are “getting really into it and arty with their covers”. Now I want to make another one to exchange. This will be an ongoing event!

I really like this year’s a lot, but I always like these mixes for about a month. We’ll see how this one stands up to previous years’ efforts. It’s fun to listen to them once a year and have the memories of that particular birthday season wash over you. We might not print many photos anymore, but it’s good to commemorate with any kind of physical media. So, as Cracker once sang, Happy Birthday to Me.
