Quickies! The Gathering

Quickies! The Gathering

The Quickies! Tour hits the Twin Cities for one night only at the Clown Lounge (Turf Club lower level) in St. Paul.

August 28 · 7:00pm- 9:00pm
Location1601 University Avenue West

Authors reading their work in a bar, not a bookstore. Enough said. But wait, there’s more.

Quickies! was started by Mary Hamilton and Lindsay Hunter as a showcase for very short prose. Each reader has five minutes to read a complete work of prose. No poetry. No excerpts. No cheating. Now, they’re teaming up with friends at Featherproof Books, Replacement Press, Books & Bars, and Hobart, renting a van, and taking it across the Midwest. We’re doing it! Everyone is invited!

Join local favorites JOHN JODZIO, ERIC VROOMAN and BRIAN JUDD along with other most excellent writers like:

BLAKE BUTLER lives in Atlanta. He is the author of EVER (Calamari Press), Scorch Atlas (featherproof books), and the forthcoming There Is No Year (Harper Perennial).

AARON BURCH is the author of the chapbook How to Take Yourself Apart, How to Make Yourself Anew (PANK Press) and the editor of Hobart. His book, How to Predict the Weather, is coming out from Keyhole Books in September 2010.

AMELIA GRAY lives in Austin, Texas. She is the author of AM/PM (featherproof books), and Museum of the Weird (Fiction Collective 2).

MARY HAMILTON is an optician in Chicago and the author of the chapbook, We Know What We Are (Rose Metal Press). Her chapbook Kill Me Forever is forthcoming from Willows Wept Press.

LINDSAY HUNTER lives in Chicago, Illinois where she co-hosts the Quickies! reading series. Her collection of slim fictions, Daddy’s, will be published by featherproof books in September 2010.

JAC JEMC sells books, makes monsters, and writes fiction, poetry, and the occasional review. Her first novel, My Only Wife, is forthcoming from Dzanc Books in 2012.

ERIC VROOMAN lives in Minneapolis and teaches at The Loft Literary Center. His short fiction has appeared in The Kenyon Review, Passages North, Hobart, Twelve Stories, Ninth Letter, and elsewhere

BRIAN JUDD teaches moral philosophy, aesthetics and intellectual history at Hamline University. He lives nearby, in a floating golden castle, in the best of all possible worlds.

JOHN JODZIO is a winner of the Loft-McKnight Fellowship. His stories have appeared in One Story, Opium, The Florida Review and Rake Magazine and a number of other places, both print and online. He’s won a Minnesota Magazine fiction prize and both the Opium 500 Word Memoir competition and Opium Fiction Prize. His short story collection “If You Lived Here, You’d Already Be Home” was recently published by Replacement Press.

Now how much would you pay for us to make your sad clown frown turn upside down? Well, it’s free!

Drinks available and recommended. Join us, you hip literati of the Twin Cities. We want you.

One of the things I’ve loved best about starting Replacement Press has been the opportunity to partner with some really cool people—our dear friends at Books & Bars come to mind, and the dynamic trio of Paper Darts, of course.
Now, for our last big blowout of the summer, we’re harnessing some serious literary synergy to bring you The Quickies! It’s a 4-stop, midwestern, 100% FREE literary tour in which each of the readers has a mere 5 minutes to read a complete work of prose—no exceptions, no exerpts, no cheating, and no mercy! We’re especially excited about this one because we get to team up with some of the coolest literary outfits around, including Featherproof Books, Hobart, Dzanc Books, Books & Bars, and more.
The tour comes to the Twin Cities on August 28. We’ll be in the Clown Lounge (lower level of the Turf Club) starting at 7. No cover, just readers, drinks, and scary pictures of clowns. We’ll be featuring local favorites John Jodzio, Brian Judd, and Eric Vrooman, plus guests Aaron Burch, Jac Jemc, Amelia Gray, Lindsay Hunter, Mary Hamilton, and Blake Butler. Deets and RSVP here.
Other stops on the tour include Madison, Iowa City, and Chicago.
